Native Nautical 11/30/11

Your classic Nautical looks consists of good 'ol All-American reds, whites and blues. The inspiration for this style comes from the glamour of sea travel and the subtle propaganda of stars and stripes flashed about seaports and cities as pearl-draped women board luxury cruise ships.

Here is a nice blog about this trend:

My Take on the Nautical Look

My look is a new take on this popular style. My inspiration comes from ancient Native American travel in canoes and boats rather than modern cruise travel.

Still incorporating stripes and contrasting colors, I have replaced those classic colors for brown, cream and purple. I used feathers and turquoise jewelry rather than the traditional motifs of anchors and steering wheels to accessorize because I think they reflect both a timelessness and a bit of eccentricity which we sometimes associate with our Native neighbors.

I am wearing a striped top that I thrifted and a long purple pleated skirt that I borrowed from mom and her infinite 80's-filled closet. I bought these purple flats on sale for $12 from Marshalls. I wrapped a thin gold belt for shape and to break up the stipes. I am wearing a long chain necklace that I bought some time ago from Claires and modified it with an old earring and additional feathers. I added a bit of turquoise with this ring and chunky beaded bracelet (both thrifted). I am also wearing purple feather earrings that I was gifted for my birthday.
